We install both. That is worth saying up front, because plenty of the metal-versus-shingle content online is written by companies that only sell one of them.
Here is how we actually talk this through with homeowners at the kitchen table.
The up-front number
A quality architectural shingle roof is the least expensive path to a new, warrantied roof. A standing-seam metal roof on the same house will typically run two to three times that number, depending on panel gauge, finish, roof complexity and how many penetrations have to be flashed.
That gap is real and there is no point pretending otherwise. The question is what you get for it.
Lifespan, in Texas terms
National averages are not much use here. Our sun is harder on asphalt than the average, and our hail is harder on everything.
In Central Texas, a well-installed architectural shingle roof with adequate ventilation realistically gives you 20 to 30 years. A standing-seam metal roof commonly runs 40 to 60. If you plan to be in the house for thirty more years, you are looking at one metal roof or two shingle roofs.
Run that comparison with actual quotes rather than averages, and include the second tear-off in the shingle column. The gap narrows considerably.
Hail performance
This is where the conversation gets specific to our market. Hail does three different things to the two systems.
Hail bruises asphalt shingles, fracturing the mat under the surface without necessarily breaking through. That bruise is a failure point that opens up over the following years. It is why a hail-damaged shingle roof gets replaced rather than patched.
Hail dents metal. A dent in a standing-seam panel is cosmetic in the vast majority of cases: the roof is still watertight, still sealed, still functional. Some homeowners hate the look, which is a legitimate reason to choose otherwise, but a dented metal roof is rarely a failed metal roof.
Impact-resistant (Class 4) shingles narrow this gap and often earn an insurance discount worth having. Ask your carrier what they credit before you decide.
Heat and energy
Dark asphalt absorbs solar radiation and re-radiates it into your attic. A painted metal roof with a reflective finish sends a large share of it back. On a July afternoon in Waco the difference in attic temperature is not subtle, and it shows up on the cooling side of your electric bill every summer for the life of the roof.
The savings will not pay for the roof by themselves. They are real, they compound, and they belong in the math.
Insurance and resale
Two things worth checking before you commit:
- Your carrier's stance. Some offer premium discounts for impact-resistant roofing systems; some apply cosmetic-damage exclusions to metal. Both affect the real cost. Call and ask.
- Your neighborhood. A standing-seam roof reads as an upgrade in most Texas markets, but an HOA may have opinions about profile and color. Confirm before ordering material.
How to choose, practically
Choose shingles if: you may sell within ten years, your budget is the binding constraint, or you want impact-resistant protection at the lowest entry cost. A quality shingle roof, installed correctly with proper ventilation, is not a compromise. It is the right answer for most homes.
Choose metal if: this is your long-term home, you are tired of replacing roofs after every serious hail season, your cooling bills are punishing, or you want the lowest total cost of ownership over thirty-plus years.
What matters more than the material is the installation. A metal roof with badly detailed flashing will leak long before a well-installed shingle roof does. Ventilation, underlayment, valley detail and penetration flashing determine whether either system reaches its rated life.
